Abstract

This study aims to find out the most dominant gender in text and picture and to describe how gender is represented in the English Textbooks. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were two English textbooks used in seventh grade Junior High School. The data were collected from texts and pictures. The findings of the study show that the gender represented through the six aspects in all chapters of two textbooks. In the first textbook Bahasa Inggris when Rings a Bell number of female and male pictures with ratio 205:172. Female and male mentioned with ratio 97:76. Female and male role with ratio 5:6. Female and male models with ratio 27:18. And number of pattern mentioning female and male names with ratio 13:12. The dominant gender from texts and pictures is female with percentetage of text 57% and picture 54%. In the second textbook Next Move the number of female and male pictures with ratio 87:77. Female and male mentioned with ratio 68:33. Female and male role with ratio 5:4. Female and male models with ratio 8:7. And number of pattern mentioning female and male names with ratio 6:6. The dominant gender from texts and pictures is female with percentetage of text 63% and picture 53%. In the both of textbooks the dominant gender bias include from two aspects, such as occupation and activities. The result showed that gender is represented unequally in the both of textbooks. Gender bias still exist in the both of English textbooks. Thus there was imbalanced gender representation in the two of textbooks.
