Abstract
This study aimed at identifying the types of the Translation Method, the use of The Translation method in the translation of the folklores “Deli Malay and Serdang Malay” from Indonesian to English and the reason why the translator used the dominant types in these folklores. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data were taken from the folklores book and interviewing the translator of the folklores. The technique for analyzing the data is descriptive qualitative research. The results of this research showed that there were 39 sentences by literal translation, 23 sentences by faithful translation, 4 sentences by semantic translation, 7 sentences by adaptation translation, 158 sentences by free translation, and 16 sentences by communicative translation. The total number of sentences from the data were 247 sentences. It was found that there were six aout of eight types of traslation methods namely Literal, Faithful, Semantic, Adaptation, Free, and Communicative Translation were used based on the text in the Folklores. The reason why the translator used free translation as the dominant method was because he did not follow any theories or approaches of translation when translating the texts, instead, he considered the target of the translations were children, so he made the translations were acceptable and easy to understand.
