Abstract
The research dealt with Modality applied in Teaching Learning Process. The aims
of this study were to analyze the modality applied in teaching learning process,
describe the realization of modality applied in teaching learning process and
explain the reason of modality applied in teaching learning process. the reaserch
was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were
utterances that contain of modality in teaching learning process. The data were
collected by using observation technique. The analysis of this study was done by
applying the theory of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014) which encompassed
data condensation, data display, and verification drawing conclusion. The types of
modality analyzed based on the types of modality proposed by M.A.K. Halliday
(1994). The finding in this study indicated that there were four types of modality
applied in teaching learning process, probability (25.38%), Usuality (3.24%),
Obligation (54.38%), and Inclination (16.98%). In teaching learning process, they
mostly applied the obligation. They also mostly applied modals in realizing the
modality to give the instructions to the students during teaching learning process
to show their powers in managing the classes that encouraged the students to give
feedbacks or responses to the teachers. The findings also showed that the use of
modality was increased when the teachers conveyed the instruction, information
or commands to the students.
