Abstract

This study deals with Metaphor in Mandailing Onang-onang sung in Bobby-Kahiyang’s
wedding ceremony. It was focused in lexical metaphor. It was aimed at investigating the kinds of
lexical metaphor used in onang-onang, to describe the lexical metaphor used in onang-onang,
and to elaborate the reasons why those kinds of lexical metaphor used in the onang-onang in that
way. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data in this study
were the clauses that contain of lexical metaphors in lyrics Mandailing onang-onang sung in
Bobby-Kahiyang Ayu’s wedding ceremony. Meanwhile, the data source was the videos of
onang-onang of Bobby-Kahiyang wedding ceremony from www. YouTube.com. The researcher
limits the data on five videos of onang-onang. They were first, Bobby-Kahiyang, second was
Jokowi and his group, third was Iriana and group, fourth was Gibran and group, and fifth was
Selfi and group tortor dance performances. The videos consist of 35 lexical metaphors. Data
were analyzed using descriptive analysis technique, by describing the kinds of lexical metaphor,
the realization of lexical metaphor, and the reason of using lexical metaphor contained in lyrics
in the onang-onang were analyzed sing the Systemic Functional Language approach. The result
showed that there six concepts of lexical metaphor, namely nominal-nominal, nominal-verbal, ,
nominal-adjective, nominal-verbal/adjective-circumtance, adjective-verbal, adjective-adjective.
The way of using lexical metaphor in Mandailing Onang-onang sung in Bobby and Kahiyang’s
wedding ceremony are through comparing noun with noun, noun with verb, noun with adjective,
noun with verb/adjective and with circumstance, verb with adjective, and adjective and adjective.
The use of lexical metaphor in Mandailing Onang-onang sung in Bobby and Kahiyang’s
wedding ceremony is highly depends on the context of situation, In this case, the reason use
lexical metaphor is realted to the field. ‘Field’ means described the activity that happened that
delivered through the onang-onang. In this study, there are new findings, the new concept of
verb-adjective and adjective-adjective
