MAINTAINING BAHASA ANGKOLA BY ITS SPEAKERS AT LANGGAR COMMUNITY IN KOTA MEDAN

The aims of this study was to investigate the factors of Angkolanese maintain
Bahasa Angkola at Langgar Community in Kota Medan. The research was
conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were the utterances
of Angkolanese speakerss. There were 20 participants of this research. The data
were collected through observation, questionnaire and interview. The result of this
study revealed that: There were seven factors that affecting language maintenance
proposed by Holmes (2001) in this study namely environment, language attitude,
use of language in family domain (intra marriage and intermarriage), use of
language in neighborhood domain, use of language in , workplace domain, use of
language in religion domain, and practice traditional ceremony. The strategies of
language maintenance which is done by the Angkola people at Langgar
Community in are family language policy, Angkola language in their daily life
frequently,and using Angkola language in cultural activity such as in wedding
ceremony. The writer found the new phenomenon at Langgar community that
because of these strategies the non Angkola speakers are able to understand the
language because they are used to hear it everytime at that area. There are three
reasons of the Angkolanese maintain their language, they are 1) to achieve honor,
2) to express the identity, and 3) to establish language diversity. By using
Angkola language in daily communication, it can show their identity as
Angkolanese and they are proud of being it. Furthermore, Angkola language is
one of the national culture of Indonesia that should be preserved.
