Abstract
This study aims to design an interactive learning book as speaking materials for the eighth grade students of SMP Dharma Bakti 1 Medan. This study was conducted by applying the six phases of educational research and development from: Gall and Borg namely: 1) Gathering information and data, 2) Analyzing data, 3) Designing speaking materials 4) Validating new speaking materials by expert, 5) Revising speaking materials and 6) Final Products (designing Interactive learning books as speaking materials). It was found that students agreed that the existing materials currently used by the students were irrelevant to their needs. The irrelevant materials were then developed through designing interactive learning book as speaking materials and relevant with their level. This interactive book consisted of 3 units of speaking materials. The learning materials were then validated by two experts. The average score of the validation was 91,2 score which showed the learning materials were very good and relevant to students’ needs in learning speaking.
