Abstract
Ilmaya, Indah. Registration Number: 2132121019. Developing English Reading Material through Content-Based Instructions for Grade X of Light Vehicle Engineering Students at SMK Negeri 2 Medan. A Thesis. English Education Program, State University of Medan, 2018. This study is aimed to develop English reading materials for vocational high school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). It was designed through six steps; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing reading materials, validating by expert, and revising new reading materials, and final product. The subject of this research was Grade X students of Light Vehicle Engineering Program at SMK Negeri 2 Medan consisting of 37 students. The data consist of syllabus and existing materials. Instrument of collecting data were questionnaires and interview which were used to getting information about students’ needs and learning needs. After analyzing the data, the result showed that the existing materials especially reading materials were not relevant to the Light Vehicle Engineering program. The developed teaching materials were related to vocation that students needs. The product has been validated by experts. The average score are 4.42 from English teacher and 4.25 from English lecturer. It means the developing materials were categorized as valid or relevant for students of Light Vehicle Engineering in Grade X. The product of this study is a set of reading materials entitled “LV-Engineering” the reading materials consist 3 unites. Each of unit consists of warmer, vocabulary builder, collecting information, associating, communicating and reflection.
