Abstract
This study addresses speech function in classroom interaction of different participants and topics. The main objective was to find out the types of speech functions in classroom verbal interaction, to describe the realization of speech functions in classroom verbal interaction, and to mention the reasons of speech functions realized in that way. It was conducted to descriptive qualitative design. The data in the research was taken from classroom in which participants were teachers and students. There is one class consisted of 35 students and two teachers, male and female. The class recorded was the first session when participants talk about a topic development in their textbooks as a part of the initial program of the school. This classroom activity combined reading with speaking practice that was with oral interaction. In analyzing the data, there were 3 activities done such as: (1) data condensation, (2) data display, and (3) conclusion drawing/verification. The findings indicated that firstly, there are found out 4 types of speech function in classroom verbal interaction, such as offer, command, statement, and question. Secondly, speech function is realized by the predicted mood type. In this study, it is found that statement is formed by declarative and interrogative, offer is formed by imperative, question is formed by interrogative, and command is formed by imperative and interrogative. Finally, some reasons why the Speech personal functions are realized in the way they are because linguistically the teachers want to show their participation in classroom interaction through teaching material, take on role, express and exchange their experience to share information.
