Abstract
This study deals with grammatical cohesion of narrative texts in students’ writing to find out the cohesive level. The objectives of the study are to find out what kind of grammatical cohesion that are found in the narrative texts written by the students at tenth grade vocational high school SMK Putra Jaya Stabat and how are
the grammatical cohesion used in the narrative text. This study was conducted by descriptive method with qualitative approach. The data of this research were the
narrative text written by the students. The result of the analysis showed that: (1).the grammatical cohesion was found in the narrative text written by the students through the applied of the cohesive devices in their writing. There were found reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction in the students’ writing.(2).
each cohesive device those were found in the narrative text categorize into poor, fair, good and excellent. Where eight of nine texts, the reference categorize good
with the percentage around 58,49- 72,72%, one categorize excellent with percentage 81,25%. Substitution devices categorize poor with percentage 0- 2,04%. Ellipsis were poor with percentage around 0- 8,33%. And conjunction
were fair with 27,27- 48,57%
