Abstract

The study deals with the types of cohesive devices used in the English Textbook for Grade XI. The objectives of study are to identify and to derive the types of cohesive devices dominantly used in the English Textbook for Grade XI. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were 74 sentences taken from 5 reading text which taken by conducting simple random sampling (25% from total 20 reading text). The finding shows that there are 125 references, 0 substitutions, 14 Ellipsis, and 69 conjunctions found in this study. The most dominant types of cohesive devices used is reference, it caused by the kind of genre that writer used while writing the reading text such as: news item, report text and descriptive text. In that kind of genre, the writer commonly uses I, you, they, us, the, that, the, largest, smaller, and so on. It means that reading text consist of many pronouns so that needs to use many reference. It can be interpreted that the writer would like to refers back to someone or something that has been previously identified and to keep the track of the identity of participants through text.
