Abstract
This study deals with Symbols on Wedding Ceremony’s Pangupa/upah-upah in Mandailing. The objectives of the study were to find out the kinds and meaning of the symbol that are used on wedding ceremony’s pangupa/upah-upah in Mandailing. This study used qualitative research. The data for this study were the materials on wedding ceremony’s pangupa/upah-upah in Mandailing. The sources of the data for this research were two informants who known as Raja-raja adat who interviewed by the researcher to get the information about the symbols and meanings.The data were analyzed by using Peirce’s theory. The researcher found 15 kinds of symbol. Each kind of symbol namely: (1) egg, (2) sticky rice, (3) head of lamb (4) eye of lamb, (5) ear of lamb, (6) horn of lamb, (7) mouth of lamb,(8) nose of lamb,(9) liver of lamb, (10) feet of lamb, (11)tail of lamb, (12) intestine of lamb,(13) salt, (14) pahar and (15) bunga bale. After analyzing the symbol, it could be concluded that each material of pangupa/upah-upah contains different symbol and also different meaning. These differences have given different interpretations
