Abstract

This study aims to find out the students’ grammatical error types and sources of error in using degree of comparison at grade VIII students of SMP Nusantara Lubuk Pakam. This study was conducted by using qualitative research design. The data of this research were collected by giving the students a test. The test consisted of 20 items and each types of degree of comparison was put in random. The result of this research are 518 total errors, from types of error there are 261 (50.38%) errors of Misorder, 146 (28.18%) errors of Omission, 102 (19.69%) errors of Misformation, and 9 (1.73%) errors of Addition. From sources of error, there are 278 (55.40%) errors of Communication Strategies, 133 (25.67%) errors of Interlingual,76 ( 14.67%) errors of Interlingual, and 22 (4.24%) errors of Contextual Learning. It can be concluded that the most dominant types of errors made by grade VIII students of SMP Nusantara Lubuk Pakam is errors of Misorder and the most dominant sources of error is Communication Strategies.
