Abstract
Literature cannot be separated with language in which plays the big roles in communication. Therefore, literature expresses a huge discussion of life as well as morality. The purposes of this research are to find out the kinds of moral values in Narit Maja and to describe its realization in the Acehnese society. This research applies the theory of universal moral values by Kinnier et.al (2000) which focuses on four types of moral values and their elements. In addition, this study is conducted by using descriptive qualitative as the method. The data of the study is the verses in Acehnese proverbs (Narit Maja) from Hasjim MK’s book entitled “Peribahasa Acehˮ which is as the source of the data as well and interview to make the data valid. The technique of collecting data is the documentation and interview technique. As the result of the research, findings show that three kinds of moral values following their elements can be found in Narit Maja. Those are commitment to something greater than oneself, self-respect but with humbleness or respect to others, self- discipline and acceptance of personal responsibility and the last moral value is caring for others do not murder, abuse, steal from, cheat, or lie to others. Furthermore, the realization of moral values in Narit Maja toward the Acehnese society can be seen until nowadays. The implementation of this local wisdom remains used in particular occasion either formal or informal situation and have been affecting the Acehnese society. Thus, although Narit Maja was created since many times ago by the wise, it can be used until now particularly to teach the next generation and to acquaintance with old literature as well in the modern society.
