Abstract
The purpose of this study was to : 1) know the process implementation of PBL model in improving students’ mathematical problem solving ability; 2) know the improvement of mathematical problem solving ability by applying PBL model at SMP Negeri 1 Bilah Hulu in Academic Year 2017/2018. Type of this research is the Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was implemented in SMP Negeri 1 Bilah Hulu.
The subjects were students of class VII-6 school year 2017/2018, consist of 38 people consisting of 20 male and 18 female. The object of this research is the ability of mathematical problem solving and model of problem-based learning (PBL).
This study consisted of two cycles which each cycle consisted of two meetings. Mathematical problem solving ability was tested at the ending of each cycle and the observation of teacher performance was observed in the learning process takes place. The results of this study could be seen : (1) The process of implementation problem based learning was running good enough because the observation of implementation PBL based teacher side categorized as good. (2) From problem solving ability test I, there are 11 students (28.95 %) gained the score ≥ 2.33 with the average score 1.77 (3) From problem solving ability test II, there are 31 students (81.58%) gained the score ≥ 2.33 with the average score 2.95
In the end of analysis, the study concluded that the implementation of problem-based learning model can improve students problem solving ability. Mathematics teacher of SMP Negeri 1 Bila Hulu suggested to implement the problem-based learning model (PBL) as an alternative learning model that can improve students problem solving skills
