THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LEADERSHIP USING LANGUAGE IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY: THE RETURN OF THE KING

The objectives of this study was to find out the communication techniques and leadership styles in the third and last movie of The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data was taken from the script of this movie. The researcher then analyzed the data by classifying the types of communication techniques and leadership styles, and observe the mostly used types and the least, wherethe reasons were then explained. The data analysis showed that there were 140 utterances made by 6 characters that act as leaders in this movie. These utterances were then classified. There were four types of communication techniques that were found as follows; 64 utterances of directing, 43 utterances of coaching, 24 utterances of supporting, and 9 utterances of delegating. while the leadership styles were found; 31 utterances of pace-setting style, 36 utterances of authoritative style, 10 utterances of affliative style, 48 utterances of coaching style, 13 utterances of coercive style, and 2 utterances of democratic style. The mostly used communication technique is directing, and it is mostly used by the character Aragorn. The least used communication technique is delegating, and it is mostly used by Gandalf and Theoden. The mostly used leadership style is coaching, and it is mostly used by the character Gandalf. The least used leadership style is democratic, and it is mostly used by Theoden and Denethor. The meaning of effective leadership is by using the right words and technique can only then a leader would be able to attract their intended audience, or lead their followers into completing their mission.
