Abstract
Code switching is a strategy of using two or more languages in the same utterance. It is a common phenomenon for bilinguals or even multilinguals. “Kick Andy Talkshow”, which is a broadcast TV program, hosted by Andy F. Noya in Metro TV, is used as the research object about code switching in this study. The purpose of this study is to find out the kinds and functions of code switching in “Kick Andy” talk show. In analyzing the kinds and functions of code switching in “Kick Andy” talk show, the writer combines both qualitative methods. Based on the result of this research, it is found that there are two kinds of code switching in “Kick Andy” talk show, such as Intra-sentential and inter-sentential. In addition, the writer also finds that the functions of code switching in “Kick Andy” talk show are to express participant’s solidarity and status, topic switch, and affective functions. English and Indonesian are the languages used in code switching in “Kick Andy” talk show. The result shows that Indonesia language is the language, which is most frequently used. The host and some other conversants often switch into English incorrectly in order to create an amusing situation. In addition, they also often switch into English by inserting some English words in the middle of an Indonesian sentence to cover their inability in speaking English.
