Abstract
This research dealt with the code switching in traditional market. The objectives of this study were: (1) to describe types of code switching are found in communicative events between buyers and sellers in traditional market. 2) to describe process of code switching in communicative events between buyers and sellers in traditional market. 3) to describe the reasons why they made code switching in communicative events in traditional market. The data were obtained from code switching are found in traditional market. This research applied qualitative research design. The data were collected through observation by taking video recording. The findings of this study showed that: 1) between buyers and sellers in traditional market, there are intersentential code switching and intrasentential code switching. It is found that dominantly the intersentential code switching in this research. 2) between buyers and sellers in traditional market, three processes of code switching, insertion, alternation, congruent lexicalization.3) between buyers and sellers in traditional market, there are reasons of using code switching , being empathic about something (express solidarity), interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), repetition used for clarification, clarifying the speech content, expressing group identity.
