Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of RAFT strategy on Students’ achievement in writing short functional text. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade VIII, Junior High School (Sekolah Menengah Pertama) SMP N 24 Medan, which consisted of 64 students. The sample was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was writing short functional text advertisement test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Pearson’ Product Moment formula. The result of the reliability was 0.89, and it was found that the test was very high. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group. It was found that the value of to value was 5.65 at the level of significant α = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 62, tt value = 2.000. It means that to was considerably higher than tt (5.65 > 2.000). The findings indicate that applying RAFT significantly affected the students’ writing short functional text especially advertisement.
