RHETORICAL PATTERN IN JOURNALISTIC LANGUAGE IN SELECTED ARTICLES ABOUT CORRUPTION IN INDONESIA IN THE JAKARTA POST

The purpose of this study was to find out the rhetorical pattern in The Jakarta Posts news about corruption in Indonesia. This study deals with the analysis of the rhetorical pattern in journalistic language (Who, What, Why, When, Where, and How). The method of this study was descriptive quantitative design that was used to identify the rhetorical pattern that was applied in The Jakarta Post daily newspaper. The data were taken from August – December 2011 edition. There were 15 articles taken randomly as the data. From the analysis, there are 210 occurrences of rhetorical pattern were found. The result of the finding showed that the What toped the rank with 50.48% (106 occurrences), followed by the Who with 34.76% (73 occurrences), When 7.62% (16 occurrences), How 4.76% (10 occurrences), Why 1.43% (3 occurrences), and Where 0.95% (2 occurrences). This explains that that the journalists of The Jakarta Post wanted to emphasize the event or issue in writing the news rather than the characters, in this case the corruptors, and also another characteristic of the six journalistics questions. It also found that there were some missing elements in each article. This implies that The Jakarta Post was not consistent with rhetorical pattern in journalistic language.
