Abstract
The research purposed to see the effectivity of the apllication of problem based learning (PBL) model to student mastery physics concepts of temperature and heat. The research population are all of physics students in first semester in one of university in Medan of academic year 2013/2014 of General Physics I. The research sample of two classes consists of 47 students in experiment class that using problem based learning model and 50 students in control class that using conventional model. The sampling based on random cluster sampling technique. Research method were used quasi-experiment with randomized control group pretest-postest design.The data of mastery concept collected with 20 items of multiple choice. The effectivity of learning model assessed based on comparing the average normalized gain value between experiment and control class. The result showed that an application of problem based learning model on temperature and heat topics significantly more effective to improve mastery of concepts and it is medium category.
