Abstract

The aims of this study were to analyze the types of speaking tasks which used in
the textbook and to analyze the appropriateness of speaking types which presented
in the textbook based on Brown’s theory. This research used qualitative research.
The data were collected from Bahasa Inggris Stop Bullying Now for grade XI
Senior High School textbook. The results of this study were the following: 1) The
types of speaking tasks used are Imitative Speaking Task (9.5%), Intensive
Speaking Task (38%), Responsive Speaking Task (28.5%), Interactive Speaking
Task (19%) and Extensive Speaking Task (5%), 2) From the five types used in the
textbook, there is a type that is inappropriate with Brown’s theory, it is Imitative
Speaking Task. The task asked the students to read aloud poetry only without
paying attention to the accuracy and fluency when they pronounce the words of
the poetry.
