TEACHER QUESTIONS AND STUDENTS’ RESPONSES IN ONLINE CLASSROOM INTERACTION AT SMP NEGERI 1 BINJAI

This study is aimed to analyze the types of questions that used by the teacher in
online classroom interaction and to describe the students’ responses to the teacher
questions in online classroom interaction. This study was conducted by using
descriptive qualitative research. It was conducted in SMP Negeri 1 Binjai in three
meetings. The technique of collected the data were observation and video
recording both teacher and students. The research finding showed that there are 3
types of questions used by the two English teachers, they were convergent
(32/52,7%), procedural (15/20%), and divergent (3/3,9%) questions. The teacher
used all the types of questions in the online classroom interaction. Thus,
convergent question was the type mostly used by the English teacher. There were
seven categories of the students’ responses to the teacher question in the online
classroom interaction, namely students’ response-specific (21/28%), student
response-open ended (13/17,3%), uses the native language (7/9,3%), silence
(6/8%), laughter (4/5,3%) confusion (non-work-oriented) (3/4%) and nonverbal
(2/2,7%). In other words, the students interested in using response specific in
answering the teacher question in the online classroom interaction.
