A STORYTELLING STRATEGY IN TEACHING ENGLISH SPEAKING OF NARRATIVE TEXT AT TENTH GRADE OF SMAS DARUSSALAM MEDAN

The aims of this study were to analyze the elements of storytelling that are applied
by the teacher as a strategy in teaching English speaking of narrative text at tenth
grade of SMAS Darussalam Medan and to explain the teacher’s reasons for
applying storytelling as the strategy. This study used a descriptive qualitative
design. The data and the data source were the storytelling strategy that applied by
the teacher in teaching English speaking of narrative text and an English teacher of
the tenth grade in SMAS Darussalam Medan. The data were collected by using
observation, video recording, and interview. The results showed that (1) The
teacher of tenth grade of SMAS Darussalam Medan applied six of seven elements
of storytelling as the strategy in teaching English speaking of narrative text. They
were quick beginning, straightforward action, definite climax, limited numbers of
characters, satisfying conclusion, and different versions. (2) The reasons why the
teacher applied storytelling as the strategy in teaching English speaking of narrative
text were: 1) Many students like to listen and tell stories. Conducting an activity
that students like can attract them to pay attention to the material to be taught, 2)
Storytelling can help students to learn about narratives, and their understanding of
stories and how to tell stories, 3) Storytelling can help students to improve students’
speaking skills
