Abstract

This study aimed at describing the use of Mnemonic Technique to enhance students’ vocabulary in writing descriptive text at the seventh grade of SMP Swasta Muhammadiyah 01 Medan in the academic year of 2018/2019. The researcher took 62 students as the sample by giving. Students in VII Terpadu 1 grade such as experiment group and VII Terpadu 2 such as control group. The data were collected by using pre-test and post-test to both classes whole process of teaching writing descriptive text by using Mnemonic Technique. This study is conducted on September 7 until September 13, 2018 during learning and teaching activities in SMP Swasta Muhammadiyah 01 Medan. Based on the research conducted, the researcher found that the use of mnemonic technique in writing descriptive text gave a significant improvement between pre-test and post-test. It can be seen in from the mean of experimental group for pre-test 54,4 and post-test 71,9. And the mean of control group for pre-test 52,875 and for post-test 61,03125. The calculation showed that t-calculated is bigger than t-table with df 60 level significance 0,05. It can be concluded that the application of mnemonic technique can improve students’ vocabulary.
