Abstract

This study aims to investigate the types and levels of students’ motivation in speaking
English through YouTube-based Videos at Grade IX UPT SMP Negeri 10 Medan by
referring to Deci and Ryan’s Self-Determination Theory (SDT, 2000) and Keller’s
ARCS Model. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design, complemented
by quantitative data, and involved 30 students who completed a 26-item questionnaire,
as well as 5 students who participated in interviews. The findings reveal that the
students mainly displayed intrinsic motivation (interest, enjoyment, satisfaction,
challenge, and good learning habits) that naturally emerged from engaging with
YouTube content, while extrinsic motivation (rewards, punishment, and encouragement
from parents, teachers, and environment) was present but less dominant. The ARCS
analysis shows that the overall motivation level was at moderate level with a mean
score of 3.59, and the Confidence component had the lowest mean, indicating that
students still struggle with anxiety and limited self-assurance when speaking English. In
conclusion, the study finds that YouTube-based videos effectively boost students’
intrinsic motivation and support autonomous learning. But however, students still need
guidance to develop confidence in speaking English.
