Abstract

This study aimed to describe the speaking ability of Grade XI students in
delivering narrative texts at State Senior High School 1 Percut Sei Tuan Medan.
The analysis focused on five speaking components, namely pronunciation,
grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. This research employed a
descriptive quantitative design with 30 students as the research subjects. Data
were collected through a speaking test in which students were required to orally
present a narrative text. Students’ performances were assessed using a speaking
rubric adapted from Muljani and Suwartono. The data were analyzed using
descriptive statistic techniques, including score calculation, mean, median, mode
score, and percentage distribution based on the school scoring rubric. The findings
showed that the students’ overall speaking ability was classified as Fair, with a
mean score of 59.6. The majority of students were categorized in the Poor and
Fair levels, while only a few students reached the Good category, and none
achieved the Very Good level. Among the five speaking components,
comprehension and vocabulary demonstrated relatively stronger performance,
whereas pronunciation, grammar, and fluency emerged as the primary areas of
weakness. These results indicate that although students generally understood
narrative texts, they encountered difficulties in expressing their ideas accurately
and fluently in spoken English. Therefore, the study suggests that more
communicative and practice-oriented speaking activities are necessary to enhance
students’ overall speaking performance.
