Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze the teacher’s implementation of the Show and Tell
(S&T) method in teaching speaking for tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 12
Medan and to explore the teacher’s view of her own practice. Employing a
qualitative approach, the data were obtained through classroom observation and
semi-structured interview. The English teacher of tenth grade served as the main
source of data. The observation documented the teaching and learning process,
while the interview explored the teacher’s perspectives, challenges, and reflections
on the method’s application. The findings revealed that the teacher implemented
the Show and Tell method based on Musfiroh (2011) principles, emphasizing
meaningful visual aids, peer interaction, and descriptive text integration. Several
modifications were made, including using printed or digital images instead of real
objects, conducting individual rather than group presentations, and incorporating
PowerPoint as a technological aid. The teacher perceived the method as effective
in fostering student’s confidence, fluency, and descriptive ability, while creating an
enjoyable and supportive learning environment. Although minor challenges such
as limited vocabulary and forgotten materials occurred, the Show and Tell method
proved to be a flexible and engaging strategy for enhancing speaking skills in EFL
classrooms.
