Abstract
This research aims to describe how the English teacher applies multisensory
techniques in teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts to eighth-grade
students at SMP Negeri 3 Percut Sei Tuan. This study employed a descriptive
qualitative design, and the data were collected through classroom observation,
teacher interviews, and student questionnaires. The findings show that the teacher
used three sensory modalities, namely visual, auditory, and kinesthetic, through
activities such as showing pictures and videos, reading aloud, and using gestures,
while the tactile element was not implemented due to limited media and time. The
questionnaire results indicate strong support for this approach, with 96.8% of
students agreeing that visual media helped them understand the story, 78.1%
agreeing that auditory input increased their interest, 56.2% responding positively to
kinesthetic activities, 93.7% agreeing that varied media made reading more
enjoyable, and 59.3% stating that multisensory activities helped them remember the
story longer. These findings suggest that multisensory techniques can enhance
students’ engagement and support their comprehension of narrative texts when
supported by appropriate classroom interactions.
