Abstract

This study was conducted to describe the implementation of the storytelling
technique in teaching speaking skills and to identify the problems faced by the
teacher in Grade VIII of SMP Swasta Pahlawan Nasional. A qualitative research
design was employed, and the data were collected through classroom observations,
teacher interviews, and documentation. The findings showed that storytelling was
implemented through three stages: pre-storytelling, while-storytelling, and poststorytelling.
Students were prepared through motivation and vocabulary
introduction, the story was narrated using expressive delivery, and speaking
practice was carried out through retelling and role-play activities. Several problems
were encountered, including limited class time, students’ low speaking proficiency,
lack of supporting media, and classroom management difficulties. It was concluded
that storytelling was an effective and engaging technique for improving students’
speaking skills when properly implemented, despite the challenges encountered
during the teaching process.
