Abstract
This research explores the implementation of rewards and
punishments by English teachers during the learning process at MTs Negeri 2
Medan. The study aims to identify the types of rewards and punishments
applied, analyze how they are implemented, and uncover the reasons behind
their use. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through
classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students. The findings
reveal that the teacher employed praise and gifts as forms of reward, and "time
out" as a form of punishment. Rewards were given to recognize students'
positive behaviour and participation, while punishments were used to
address disruptive actions. The study shows that although not all
implementation guidelines were followed, the teacher used these strategies to
create a structured and motivating classroom environment. The research
concludes that a balanced application of rewards and punishments can
positively influence students' behavior, motivation, and classroom
atmosphere.
