Abstract
This study aimed to investigate eighth-grade students' perceptions of the Show and
Tell method in teaching speaking at SMP Negeri 1 Harian, as well as the factors
influencing those perceptions, based on Robbins & Judge's (2013) categorization of
perceptions into positive and negative aspects, addressing the need for effective
speaking methods in rural settings with basic English proficiency. Employing a
descriptive qualitative research method, data were collected through questionnaires
distributed to 30 students and interviews with 8 students, analyzed descriptively to
identify patterns and themes, and factors influencing perceptions were analyzed
based on internal and external categories adapted from Rahmat (2017). The findings
revealed positive perceptions, such as increased comfort (73.34% of students),
motivation, and social interactions due to interactive elements and peer support,
alongside negative perceptions including ineffectiveness in improving vocabulary
and speaking skills (70% agree). And it was found the factors affecting perceptions,
there are Structural factors and functional factors influenced the respondents'
perceptions. Factor analysis indicated functional factors (experiences and
vocabulary limitations). Followed by structural factors (teacher support and
classroom environment). In conclusion, while Show and Tell fosters motivation and
interaction, modifications are needed to address skill-building and enhance
confidence in English speaking, necessitating additional strategies to enrich
vocabulary, provide constructive feedback, and create a safe and supportive
classroom environment."
