Abstract

This study discusses presuppositional meanings in emo rap song lyrics from Sewerperson’s Face Eater album (2020) by applying George Yule’s (1996) theory of presupposition and Levinson’s (1983) theory of presupposition triggers. The research aims to identify the types of presupposition found in the lyrics and to explore the presupposition triggers realized in the types of presupposition in the selected songs. The analysis of the Face Eater album's lyrics, employing a qualitative methodology, yielded data from eight songs. The results indicate the presence of six presupposition types: existential presuppositions accounted for 68.8%, factive presuppositions 5.2%, non-factive presuppositions 1.9%, lexical presuppositions 10%, counterfactual presupposition 1% and structural presuppositions 13%. In terms of presupposition triggers, definite description is the most frequent 35.8%, followed by factive predicates 22.0%, iterative 11.9%, and several others, while some triggers are not found from the data. The results of study contribute to presupposition and serves as a reference for analyzing meaning in emo rap song lyrics.
