Abstract
This research is aimed to find out the validity, the practicality and the effectiveness of Computer-based Training (CBT) for English Maritime Course of the seafarer candidates at SMK Pelayaran Samudera Indonesia Medan. This research has also an intrinsic purpose to find out the target and learning needs, and the appropriate learning materials for the seafarer candidates. The method of this research is a research and development (R&D). The steps of doing this research are (1) need analysis, (2) model design (3) expert validation (4) revisions, and (5) implementation. Data were collected through observations, expert validation sheets, teacher and student feedback, and performance assessments and analysed by using descriptive quantitative and qualitative design. The findings reveal that the existing teaching model relied on traditional and teacher-centered methods with limited integration of technology. In response, Computer-based Training (CBT) was designed and developed to provide interactive learning experiences. Expert evaluations confirmed its high validity in terms of content relevance, pedagogy, and media effectiveness. Teachers and seafarer candidates found the model to be highly practical and user-friendly, indicating its ease of implementation in classroom settings. The result of this research recommends that Computer-based Training (CBT) as a tutorial learning and individual assessment tool is considered to be one of the best interactive learning media for seafarer candidates on board training. Computer-based Training (CBT) can provide more opportunities for the seafarer candidates to play a more active role in the acquisition of ship knowledge
