Abstract
This study investigates the translation techniques applied in the Indonesian version of the children’s storybook Yan’s Hajj: The Journey of a Lifetime, based on the framework proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The research aims (1) to identify the types of translation techniques used, (2) analyze their linguistic realizations, and (3) analyze the reasons behind their application. Using a qualitative descriptive method supported by document analysis, 234 translation units were examined. The findings reveal that Modulation was the most frequently used technique (57 occurrences), followed by Reduction (44), Amplification (38), Established Equivalent (31), Transposition (26), and Literal Translation (22). Less common techniques included Adaptation (5), Discursive Creation (2), Generalization (2), and various combinations of techniques. The realization of these techniques occurred across multiple linguistic levels, including Semantic, Pragmatic, Syntactic, Grammatical, Lexical, and Cultural. The reasons for applying these techniques were identified as stemming from communicative function, linguistic differences, target audience needs, cultural gaps, translation method, and genre conventions. The study concludes that the translator’s technique choices
reflect a balance between fidelity to the source text and functional, cultural, and developmental suitability for young Indonesian readers
