Translation Techniques Used in Subtitlings on Alita Battle Angel Movie

This study deal with translation techniques used in subtitlings on Alita Battle Angel
Movie. The objectives of thhis study were to investigate, analyze and explain the
reason of the translation techniques used in subtitlings the movie. The data of this
research was taken by the transcription in subtitlings the movie that consist of two
different language SL (English) and TL (Indonesian). The data focused on the
utterances of the main character, Alita. The results of the analysis showed that there
are 15 kinds of the translation techniques appear in Alita’s utterances. The
translation techniques of 47 data (15.01%) are translated by using Reduction, 46
data (14.69%) are Literal Translation, 34 data (10.86%) are Modulation, 33 data
(10.54%) are Adaptation, 30 data (9.58%) are Established Equivalent, 25 data
(7.98%) Calque, 22 data (7.02%) are Transposition, 19 data (6.07%) are
Borrowing, 18 data (5.75%) are Compensation, 17 data (5.43%) are Linguistic
Compression, 8 data (2.55%) are Generalization, 7 data (2.23%) are Amplification,
6 data (1.91%) are Linguistic Amplification, 1 data (0.31%) are translated by using
Substitution. Reduction is the dominant translation techniques used by the
translator. The highest frequency used is Reduction with the percentage 15.01%.
The lowest frequency is Substitution with the percentage 0.31%.
