Abstract
The goal of this research is to analyze students’ engagement levels in writing
descriptive text through pictures as a learning media. The objectives of the study
to uncover the level of students’ engagement that students of tenth grade SMAN 1
Pegajahan show in writing descriptive text. This study was conducted by using a
descriptive qualitative design. The techniques of data collection in this research
were observation and interview. The data were analyzed by the level of students’
engagement proposed by Trowler (2010) and indicated based on characteristics
suggested by Jones (2009). The findings showed that students' engagement levels
for behavioral engagement 18,5% of students got a very high level, 31% of
students got a high level, 30% of students got a medium level, 15.5 of students got
a low level, 5% of students got a very low level. Emotional engagement found
that 29% of students got a very high level, 12% of students got a high level, and
59% of students got a medium level. Cognitive engagement found that 32 % of
students got a very high level, 30% of students got a high level, 34% of students
got a medium level, and 4% of students got a low level. The majority of the
percentages showed the students were positively engaged.
