Abstract
This study attempted to analyze the translation techniques that were applied to
English-Indonesian translation results by the tenth-grade students at MAN 2 Model
Medan. The objective of this study was to describe the role of translation techniques
in reading comprehension by the students because reading comprehension was the
process of translating a text that was being read. This study used the descriptive
qualitative method. The translation techniques analysis was done by using Vinay
and Darbelnet’s (1995) classification of translation techniques. The translation
technique analysis was done by comparing the students’ translation work with the
source text of a narrative entitled “The Smartest Animal”. The study’s findings
revealed that mostly the students applied literal translation and borrowing during
translating the narrative text. Translation techniques applied by the students in
translating affect to the translation result and it was influenced by students’ reading
comprehension. There were six types of translation techniques applied by students
in translating narrative text, such as literal translation (25.75%), borrowing
(25.75%), calque (15.15%), adaptation (18.18%), modulation (6.06%), and
equivalence (9.09%). Meanwhile for the other translation techniques were not used
by the students, such as transposition in the translation done by 17 students.
