A Stereotype of Chinese towards American as Portrayed in Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

This study aimed to identifying the factors initiating stereotype based on Smith
(1980) and the stereotypical perceptions of Chinese towards American based on
Lin Zhu (2016) in Crazy Rich Asians (2018) movie. This study was conducted by
applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data is the written
spoken words in Crazy Rich Asians (2018) movie script. This research used the
theory of Factors Initiating Stereotype by Smith (1980) that there are 5 types of
stereotype namely individualistic, fiendly/outgoing, adventurous, independent and
self-centered (Lin Zhu, 2016). The result showed that there are 5 types out of 6
types of stereotype, they are 3 utterances for Individualistic, 6 utterances for
Friendly/Outgoing, 6 utterances for Adventurous, 2 utterances for Independent, 2
utterances for Self-centered. There was only 1 type of stereotype that not used in
the movie which is More Ready to Criticize their Parents. The reason why
stereotype used by the Chinese character was the differences between their
culture.
