Abstract

Mastering English is crucial for hospitality students as it enables effective communication with international guests and enhances career opportunities. This study analyzes the speaking materials in an English textbook based on the 2013
Curriculum for 10th grade students at SMK Pariwisata Imelda Medan. The curriculum emphasizes communicative competence and practical language use, making it essential to evaluate the relevance and effectiveness of textbook materials in developing students' speaking skills. The research employs a
qualitative descriptive method, focusing on content analysis of the speaking materials in the English textbook used at SMK Pariwisata Imelda Medan. Two checklists were used: one to assess the alignment of the speaking materials with
the 2013 Curriculum syllabus and another to evaluate their relevance to curriculum criteria. Data were collected and analyzed using percentages to determine suitability. The analysis revealed that the English textbook "Buku Bahasa Inggris" achieved a 75% suitability score with the 2013 Curriculum criteria. While the textbook provides logical and implementable speaking materials for classroom use, some revisions are necessary to enhance its effectiveness. The findings suggest the textbook adequately supports the development of speaking skills but could benefit from improvements to fully meet curriculum standards and student
needs. This research highlights the importance of selecting textbooks that align with the current curriculum to foster effective language learning. The identified
strengths and weaknesses provide valuable insights for curriculum developers, textbook authors, and educators in refining instructional materials to better support
students' speaking skills.
