Abstract

This study examines the grammatical and lexical cohesion markers in descriptive texts found in the Advanced Indonesian Language textbook for high school students. The research identifies various grammatical cohesion markers, including references, substitutions, ellipses, and conjunctions, as well as lexical cohesion markers such as repetitions, synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, equivalence, and
collocations. The frequency analysis reveals that coordinating conjunctions are the most common grammatical cohesion markers, followed by references, ellipses, and substitutions. Lexical cohesion is predominantly marked by repetitions, with antonyms, synonyms, hyponyms, collocations, and equivalences also present. The findings underscore the importance of cohesive devices in enhancing text readability and comprehension. The study suggests that teachers should
emphasize cohesion and coherence in their instruction to improve students' understanding of descriptive texts. Future research is recommended to explore cohesion from pragmatic and linguistic error perspectives, utilizing a broader range of descriptive texts.
