Abstract
This study focused on finding the types of code switching used by the teacher in teaching narrative texts to eighth grade students at SMPN 27 Medan. The researcher used a descriptive-qualitative design to collect data through
observations and interviews. The analysis revealed the following findings: 1) The teacher used three types of code-switching: solidarity, status, and topic. 2) Codeswitching
was manifest in various classroom situations, such as explaining complex words or grammar, posing thought- provoking questions to encourage critical thinking and discussion among students, facilitating classroom
discussions, and providing feedback on student writing or presentations. 3) The teacher used code-switching for various reasons, including reducing pressure on students to understand and respond in a less proficient language, encouraging active participation in class discussions, facilitating better communication between the teacher and students, and clarifying complex concepts or providing
additional explanations. The research results are expected to be beneficial for anyone interested in studying code switching.
