Abstract

This research deals with problems faced by the eighth-grade students in
translating English narrative texts into Indonesian. This research was aimed to
find out what types of problems are faced by students in translating narrative texts
and what solutions are given by the teacher when students face problems in
translating narrative texts from English to Indonesian. This research was
conducted in the eighth grade of the MTS Al-Ittihadiyah Percut Sei Tuan school
using a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this study were obtained from
the translation of students' narrative texts from English to Indonesian. The data
analysis technique in this study used Cresswell's theory. This research was
conducted in class VIII-1 using tests, instruments, and questionnaires. From the
research, researchers found some problems faced by students in translating
English narrative texts into Indonesian. There are five types of problems found in
this study, namely; not transmitted, incomplete sentence, grammar, vocabulary,
addition. The highest number of student problems is dealing with vocabulary
(45.45%). The second highest was not transmitted (22.37%). The third highest is
incomplete sentences (20.27%). The fourth highest is addition (9.0%). The fifth
highest is grammar (2.7%). The solution given by the teacher after knowing the
problems faced by students when translating narrative text from English into
Indonesian is that the teacher advises students to record English vocabulary they
just know or vocabulary they don't understand into notes and memorize it to
increase their vocabulary so that The number of vocabularies that students know
will increase over time.
