Abstract

The objective of this research was intended to analyze the types and the reasons of
English teacher used code mixing when teaching English to the second grade
students of SMP Maju Besitang. The method of this research was descriptive
qualitative method. The subject was The English teacher of SMP Maju Besitang.
The data of this research was Code Mixing used by the teacher in teaching
English. Based on the finding, the researcher concluded that there were three
types of code-mixing in teaching English namely insertion, alternation, and
congruent lexical. In the data that has been taken, there were twenty-two types of
insertion consisting of five verbs, thirteen nouns, and four prepositions. There
were four types of alternation consisting of four types of clauses. There were
fourteen types of congruent lexicalization. The result of interview session showed
that the reasons why the teacher of SMP Maju Besitang used code mixing were
because repetition used for clarification and Intention of Clarifying the Speech
Content for Interlocutor. Based on the result of the research it could be suggested
for the teacher that code-mixing be one of the alternative methods in teaching
English or transferring knowledge in different ways so it is useful for both the
teacher and the students as well
