Abstract

This study aims to analyze the parenting patterns applied by the Toba Batak ethnic group in fostering children's motivation to migrate. The tradition of migrating has become an important part of the Toba Batak culture, which is influenced by family parenting patterns that emphasize
values such as independence, hard work, and responsibility. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach in Sekoci Village, with data collection techniques through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the dominant parenting pattern applied by Toba Batak families in Sekoci Village is a democratic parenting pattern, where parents give children the freedom to make decisions, but still under
supervision and guidance. This parenting pattern encourages children to have the courage, independence, and motivation to migrate in order to improve their standard of living and bring pride to the family. In addition, there is also an authoritarian parenting pattern that emphasizes children's obedience to their parents, although with little room for discussion. With a strong parenting pattern based on cultural values, Toba Batak children grow up with the understanding that migrating is not just a choice, but part of the life process to achieve success.
