TRANSLATION METHODS IN TRANSLATING AGATHA CHRISTIE’S INDONESIAN VERSION NOVEL ‘KUCING DITENGAH BURUNG DARA’

This research dealt with eight types translation methods in Agatha Christie’s Indonesian
version novel ‘Kucing di Tengah Burung Dara’. This study was aimed to (1) investigating
the types of translation methods were applied in Agatha Christie’s Indonesian version novel
‘Kucing ditengah Burung Dara’ (2) explaining how the application of translation methods
were realized in Agatha Christie’s Indonesian Version Novel ‘Kucing ditengah Burung Dara’
(3) elaborating the reason why the translation methods were realized as the way they were.
This study was conducted in a qualitative descriptive method. The data were the clauses from
both Agatha Christie’s Indonesian and English version novel. In order to identify the
translation methods in the novel, Newmark (1988) theory of translation methods and
Chesterman. A (2017) theory of the reasons of translation methods were applied, and
Robinson (2012) theory of the process of translation method. All the theories were used to
conduct this study. The data were collected by purposive sampling data. The selected data
were the clauses from Agatha Christie’s Indonesian version novel ‘Kucing di Tengah Burung
Dara’ and English version novel ‘Cat among the Pigeons. The results of the study were found
that the eight types of translation methods were used in translating the novel from English
into Bahasa. The dominant translation method was communicative (46,4%). The dominant of
the process of translation method was edit (52,1%). And the dominant reason of translation
method was communication norm (52,1%). The reason why it became the highest percentage
was because in this novel the communication between source language and target language as
in trying to retain the same meaning or function of the source text. It requires that the
translation product should communicate in such a way that others recognize and interpret the
means of communication in the way it intends to, in the same way as people communicate.
