Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the Question and Answer Relationship (QAR)
strategies that has used by the teacher in teaching reading comprehension of
Procedure Text to Eleventh Grade Students at Man 2 Model Medan and to
elaborate the reasons used the Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) strategies in
teaching reading comprehension of Procedure Text to Eleventh Grade Students at
Man 2 Model Medan. This study used the theory of Raphel and Au (2005) where
there are two categories in QAR strategies. The researcher utilized qualitative
methods, including observation and interview. This study found that (1) there are
two categories of QAR such as “In The Book” (Right There Questions and Think
and Search Questions) and “In The Head” (Author and Me Questions and On My
Own Questions). The Highest frequency in the categories of QAR strategies is “In
The Book” with 18 frequency. (2) Several reasons for the teacher’s use of QAR
strategies are that strategies help improve students’ reading comprehension,
participation and motivation, as they are easy to use and understandable. The
QAR strategies promotes student-centered learning, where students are encourage
to discuss, share ideas, increase their knowledge.
