Abstract

The aim of the study was to examine the types of sexist language encountered by
the main character and how the main character responded to sexist language. The
research was conducted using qualitative methods, and written narratives and
dialogue from the "Mary Queen of Scots" movie script were analyzed. Data were
collected through observation and classification of the script text. The findings
revealed two types of sexist language: overt sexism and indirect sexism. Overt
sexism included 'naming, dictionaries, generic pronouns and nouns, insult terms
for women, semantic derogation, surnames and titles, transitivity, reported speech,
and jokes.' Indirect sexism included humor, presupposition, conflicting messages,
script and metaphors, collocation, and androcentric perspective. The analysis of
the main character's responses to sexist language utilized self-defense theory.
