Abstract
This research was conducted to analyze the use of picture series in teaching
speaking procedure text for eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Barumun. This
research used descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were all the
information and knowledge about the use of picture series in teaching speaking
procedure text. The sources of the data in this research were 30 students from
grade eleventh at SMAN 1 Barumun. The instruments of this research were
observation checklist, field notes, a video recording, and interview sheet and voice
recorder. This research was focused on one English skill, speaking, specifically
within the genre of procedure texts. The results showed that the use of picture
series in teaching procedure text based on Nunan (2001) theory: There were (1)
teacher informed the students what they should do, (2) asked students to listen the
explanation the text that was being told by the teacher, (3) explained the text to
the students by using picture series, (4) asked several questions related to the
activities they had to do it after listening to the explanation, (5) retold the
procedure text once again so that the students were able to do it to explain again,
(6) asked students to retell the procedural text that has been discussed teacher, (7)
and asked several students to come forward and retell the text procedure after
listening to their friend. The problems were faced by the teacher in teaching
procedure text by Sweller, J. (2019). That are: (1) lack of confidence (2) limited
vocabularies, (3) fear of making mistakes.
