Abstract

This research is about English Teacher's Strategies in Teaching Reading
Comprehension of Descriptive Text in Grade Seventh of MTs Nurhasanah Balai
Jaya Riau. There are two objectives of this study, the first objective is to analyze
the strategies used by two English teachers in teaching reading comprehension of
descriptive text and the second objective is to explain the reasons of both teachers
use these strategies in teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text. The
data of this research are taken from the teachers who teach in the seventh grade of
MTs Nurhasanah Balai Jaya Riau. The research design of this study was
descriptive qualitative research. The data were analyzed using Vacca and Vacca's
(1999) theory of teaching reading strategies and Harmer (2003) about the reasons
to teach reading comprehension skills . The data collection instruments were video
recording and interview sheet. The teachers use various strategies in teaching
reading comprehension of descriptive text, namely: QARs and SQ3R. The reasons
why the teachers used those strategies were because the strategies helped the
teachers to know the extent of his students understanding of the material given and
to train the students dig out information from within the text and can
