Abstract

This study aimed to (1) analyze teacher strategies in teaching descriptive text at
Eighth Grade in SMP Negeri 2 Raya and (2) describe the teacher reasons for using
the teaching strategies. The type of research used was a descriptive qualitative
study. The data were collected through the observation of the teaching and
interview with the teacher. The data were analyzed by using data reduction, data
display, and conclusion drawing. The findings of this study showed that (1) the
teacher used six strategies by Haynes and Zacarian (2010) in teaching writing,
they were determine key concept, make the lesson visual, link new information,
provide comprehensible input, modify vocabulary, cooperative learning and
modify testing. (2) There were three reasons why the teacher used the strategies.
The strategies helped the students understand the lesson, increased students‟
attention in the learning, and improved students‟ participation in class.
